Today when I wanted to check if an ad was print ready, the PDF/X window in Adobe Acrobat 8 looked like this:

No, I haven’t cropped the screen shot! The only thing showing up was the title bar! And when I tried to resize the “window” I ended up with this:

Well, I tried Google for a solution (no solution found), then Adobe’s Knowledge Base (no solution found), and finally Adobe’s Support Forum (no solution found). I had to fix it myself.
From experience I started looking for application settings in my user profile. I ended up in the folder C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Adobe\Acrobat\Preflight Acrobat 8\Settings where I found some XML-files.
The file named window.xml sounded like a logical choice. I opened it for a quick look before I renamed it to window.xml.bak as in backup - you can rename it to anything but window.xml as long you have a backup file if something goes wrong (I’ve heard that things may go wrong with computers).

Next time when starting Acrobat the window.xml will automatically be recreated which fixes the problem!
